Is It Performance If You’re Depleted?

Performance is a tricky word. Is it really your best performance if you feel depleted and disconnected all the time? We tend to socially reward people who outwardly go hard. But would you still respect them if you knew that they weren’t present with their families and loved ones? Or they were snappy at work because they were tired and edgy all the time?

If you are wanting to be the best version of yourself than you have to learn to fulfill all the needs of your body. That includes community and recovery. If you have left yourself with zero reserve everyday what happens when life happens? The real urgencies that require more energy. Well you have nothing left to give.

And it shows. We are only fooling ourselves. Rest and recovery is not binge watching our shows and eating whatever we want. True rest and recovery is looking at what your body needs as a whole complex organism. Full of other organisms that contribute to your health and well-being.

The body cannot create adaptation under chronic stress. It needs the resources to do so. In other words, you may have never met your best self yet. You may not realize how much better you could be performing. Not if you are constantly running at a deficit.

Take out your journal and watch this short video. We will be reflecting on your current state. Being edgy and quick to temper or emotion are signs you are depleted. That’s not performance. That’s burning out. We can do better but we have to begin where we begin.
