Starting her career unofficially & young, Myers was always used to a wide array of mediums (Ask her parents the story of when they first thought she may be an artist, while in diapers). Growing up on Kaua'i, Hawai'i, Myers has always incorporated the outdoors to her art. Whether it was water or flowers or storms. The natural influences & curiosities of the world have always been and will be a part of Myers' work. She believes it's essential that we all stay curious.
Myers current work combines the complexity & simplicity that is our everyday lives. Through that work comes an array of ideas from darkness to inspiration, anger to happiness, acceptance to opposition. All facets of the human emotion (as we are interconnected by them) fascinate her.
So if you want to laugh & cry, be happy & sad, see hope & despair, Myers work may call out to you.
Top Artistic Influences:
1.) Music of ALL kinds (We're talking from Yanni to Linkin Park). Music is an avenue for how Robbie FEELS. Whether zoning out or dancing her booty off, music has a special & private place in her heart.
2.) Mythology & Fairy Tales - This list could go on forever. As a young girl, Greek Gods & Hero's were more interesting to Myers than a Barbie. Through the years this expanded to Saturday Morning Cartoons (He-Man, Thundercats, Transformers) & admiring Super Hero's, from the X-Men to The Tick to Archer. The inspiration is vast & endless; from The Little Prince, to Lord of the Rings, to the Grimm Brothers, to Mary Poppins, to Star Wars, to TMNT, to Care Bears, to Baby Ruth, to Donkey, to Inspector Gadget, to The Wizard of Oz, to The Princess Bride, to The Sound of Music, to Firefly, to Wee Sing Silly Songs, to Star Trek, to Alice, to Peter, to Harry... stories, basically Myers is inspired by stories! Using her imagination has always been her favorite past time. There is always a story going through her mind.
3.) Jim Henson - An underdog that took over the world with puppets. Henson knew how to use humor for both children & adults, reminding us to never let go of our creativity. His ability to do what he loved without worrying about the acceptance of others has help push the production of Waffle Art through that inspirational thinking alone. Myers hopes to bring life to her art just as Henson has with his creations.
4.) Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss & Conan O'Brien.
We all need permission to be a little weird as an adult. There was no better influence for Myers on the absolute absurd than them. Silverstein says it best with his 'Invitation':
"If you are a dreamer, come in,If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...If you're a pretender, come sit by my fireFor we have some flax-golden tales to spin.Come in!Come in!"-Shel Silverstein; Where the Sidewalk Ends
5.) Those who have gone before her & have allowed her to stand on their giant shoulders. Today's technology allows us to learn in even more detail from those willing to teach. Robbie's work wouldn't be here if these greats didn't go first with their creative works. PS. Note from Robbie: Everything they've created has helped me re-define who I am. :)
